19 – 20 March 2012
19/March/2012 Arrived in Interlaken
20/March/2012 Half-day wandering around the city, then go to Geneva, fly to Barcelona
We bought our train ticket to Interlaken directly in Bern Bahnhof, instead of bought it online. The ticket is more expensive compare to our other booked train ticket during the Eurotrip. And later we found out it came with full flexibility. In Switzerland, we only book the date of travel and the destination, the time on that specific date is flexible. We can take any train at any time! Flexibility is privilege for us traveler.
Our arrival day in Interlaken was a rainy day. Google map shown us that our hostel – ‘Balmers’ – is in walking distance from the train station ‘Interlaken – Ost’ (Ost means East), so we decided to walked under the rain. It was not the rain, but the weather was so chilling. I remember it was so cold, I thought maybe because it is in Switzerland, the rain was verryyyyy cold, made us freezing. And we got lost again 🙂 Since the weather was not too good that day, we rarely met anyone to ask. Until we stucked in a big intersection, we stopped and re-read our map. Across the street we saw an old man walking.
Yes he crossed the street, then walked toward us. Asked where we want to go. He said, I saw you had a map and maybe I can help. After he gave us the direction, he walked back, crossing the street and walked to other direction. Ok he crossed the big street only for us. Once again travel reveal the good side of the world.
We spent the rest of the day in our hostel, in a cold weather, we made hot chocolate & hot noodles. Cold weather forced us to remain in the hostel and do nothing that talking each other. When the night came, it became obvious that the snow was falling that night. Our first snow! And we are lucky because our room located under the roof top and above our bed is made of glass. So when we lied down in bed, we can see directly the sky. That night we can see the snow.
The interesting thing that our hostel reception said to us not to worry about the weather that day because the next day will be a sunny day. And it is true! So weather forecast in Interlaken is very accurate. After a snowy day, the next day was really a sunny day.
Our itinerary in Interlaken was only to see the Alpen or the Alps. And that morning, when we went out from the hostel door, that gigantic mountain is there. We can see it from everywhere in Interlaken. Because it was sunny, the mountain reveal itself clearly.
Interlaken is a small city which you can wandering around the city by walk. The neighborhood is friendly. When we took the bus, we can see that the passengers know the bus driver and vice versa. They talked during the bus ride, said bye and thank you. It was very warm.
It was not an easy decision when I decided to choose Interlaken instead of other city as part of our itinerary in Switzerland. Switzerland has Geneva, Zurich, Lucerne, Lausanne, Basel, Montreux, and so on. But then Interlaken is the nearest point when we want to see or go to Alps. As far as I remember, it was also the same reason on why I went to Nagarkot in Nepal, and why I went to Kota Kinabalu in Malaysia. To see the mountain is always the reason. Maybe I am mountain-person instead of beach-person, if there is a category for that. For me, to see those mega-gigantic mountain can always remind me on how small I am as human being in this big universe and how big God is as the Creator of the universe 🙂 .
If you want to go to Alps, there is the highest railway station named Jungfraujoch located in Alpen, the highest railway station in Europe. And the train depart from Interlaken train station. Did we go there? No, due to time and budget limitation. Maybe next time. And after all, we had our first snow in Interlaken. It was not planned, but I think it was one of God gift for us – for being able to experienced it together. 🙂
